The name Can Tho is originated from “Cam Thi Giang” – the river of poems. This is one among Vietnam’s biggest cities, which is situated in the heart of the Mekong Delta region, within a network of rivers and canals. The province shares the common borders with five other provinces: An Giang in the north, Dong Thap in the north-east, Hau Giang in the south, Kien Giang in the west, and Vinh Long in the east.
The province possesses a complex of rivers and canals system namely Hau and Can Tho Rivers, Thot Not and O Mon canals, which is the advantage for development of tourism. Can Tho city has three big ports which are capable of accommodating 10,000 tons ships. It is convenient for loading and transporting goods. With its diversified rivers and canals system, Can Tho reflects a unique nature and architecture features. Ninh Kieu Wharf and bang Lang Garden are the two well-known destinations for its special architecture. Visiting Can Tho, tourists will be impressed by the floating market – Cai Rang, where local people buy and sell goods. All purchasing activities take place on the river, which is a attraction characteristic of Cai Rang Market.
There are two ethnic groups who are living harmoniously in Can Tho – the Khmer and Hoa people. This has created a special cultural feature for the province.
