Detailed Itinerary

08:00-08:30: Your tour guide picks you up from the Old Quarter area / Opera House area to begin your Hanoi city tour. In the morning, you’ll visit:

  • Tran Quoc Pagoda sits on an island in the east of West Lake (Tay Ho District). With nearly 1500 years of history, it stands as the oldest pagoda in Thang Long – Hanoi. Its architecture combines majesty, ancient charm, and elegance, complementing the peaceful backdrop of the vast lake. During the Ly and Tran dynasties, it served as the Buddhist center of Thang Long citadel.
  • Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum Complex featuring Uncle Ho’s Mausoleum, stilt house, fish pond, and One Pillar Pagoda.

Note: The Mausoleum Management Board performs maintenance on Mondays and Fridays. On these days, you’ll view the Mausoleum’s exterior and visit the stilt house area, fish pond, and One Pillar Pagoda.

  • Temple of Literature – Quoc Tu Giam, Vietnam’s first university. Built in October 1073, this grand architectural complex stands today as a tribute to Confucius and Chu Van An – the principal of Quoc Tu Giam – representing Vietnamese education’s high moral philosophy.

Noon: Your guide takes you to lunch at a local restaurant.

Afternoon: Continue to explore:

  • Thang Long Imperial Citadel showcases relics from pre-Thang Long through the Dinh – pre-Le dynasties, flourishing under the Ly, Tran, and Le dynasties before becoming Hanoi’s citadel during the Nguyen Dynasty. Kings across multiple periods built this architectural masterpiece, now a cornerstone of Vietnamese monuments.

Note: The Imperial Citadel closes every Monday. Monday tours visit Ngoc Son Temple instead.

  • Hoa Lo Prison, formerly known as the Hanoi Hilton, preserves part of the French colonial-era prison. Though partially demolished in 1990, it now serves as a museum.
  • Hoan Kiem Lake (Sword Lake) features Vietnamese and French architecture. View Ngoc Son Temple (dedicated to Saint Van Xuong and General Tran Hung Dao) and The Huc Bridge from outside. Optional temple entry available at your own cost.

16:00: Tour ends. Return to your Old Quarter hotel, or optionally take a cyclo ride around the Old Quarter and Sword Lake or watch a water puppet show (schedule varies by season).
