Pu Luong Nature Reserve (Khu bảo tồn thiên nhiên Pù Luông) is a 17,662-hectare nature reserve in the west of Thanh Hoa province, set up in 1999, with Thai and Muong villages and rice terraces in the valleys below its limestone ridges. By road it is about 185 km from Hanoi through Mai Chau, or about 140 km from Ninh Binh. There is no entrance ticket for the reserve. Ban Don village is the main base, with most of the homestays and resorts; visitors spend their days walking between villages, a cave and a waterfall.

Where is Pu Luong Nature Reserve?

In the north-west of Thanh Hoa, next to the Mai Chau valley. The reserve covers 13,320 ha of strictly protected forest and 4,343 ha of ecological restoration zone, according to the national biodiversity agency (NBCA) and the reserve’s own site. Together with neighbouring Pu Hu, its forest protects the upper watershed of the Ma River. The name is Thai for the highest peak in the area, and that peak, Pu Luong, is about 1,700 m high.

The addresses changed in 2025. The reserve spreads over parts of the old Ba Thuoc and Quan Hoa districts, and districts were abolished on 1 July 2025. Under Resolution 1686/NQ-UBTVQH15, the former communes of Thanh Son, Lung Niem and Thanh Lam became a single Pu Luong commune, which now holds Ban Don, Kho Muong and the Pho Doan market. Lung Cao merged into Co Lung commune, which holds Hieu waterfall and the Son, Ba and Muoi villages. Booking sites may still show the old commune names.

One more name issue: you will occasionally see it called Pu Luong National Park. We found no government decision upgrading it, and the national biodiversity agency still lists it as a nature reserve.

When are the Pu Luong rice terraces green or golden?

Pu Luong grows two rice crops a year, so it turns gold twice. VnExpress, reporting in June 2025, put the first harvest at late May to mid-June and the second at late September to early October, with each golden spell lasting only two to three weeks. The national tourism site, vietnam.travel, also names September and October as harvest time. In 2025 the summer crop ripened early and the gold was gone by late June, so the dates move from year to year.

Visitors’ videos match those two windows: golden fields filmed in June 2025 and June 2026, and again from early September into October. If gold is the point of your trip, ask your homestay a week or two ahead how the crop looks.

Green terraces fill the gaps: VnExpress describes the fields as green through the summer, and its guide photo of green terraces was taken in late August. A note on conflicting sources: vietnam.travel calls late May to early June the time of young green rice, while VnExpress’s 2025 report shows ripe rice at that time. This guide follows the dated newspaper report.

How to get to Pu Luong from Hanoi

Most people take a limousine van from Hanoi. Expect 250,000–450,000 VND one way, with hotel pickup in the Old Quarter and drop-off at your homestay or resort rather than a bus station. One operator we checked charges 440,000 VND, leaves Hanoi at 7 am and returns from Pu Luong at 1 pm, with a 50,000 VND surcharge on holidays. Ordinary coaches are cheaper, from about 150,000 VND one way. The trip takes about 4 to 4.5 hours.

Driving, the usual route is National Road 6 through Mai Chau, then road 15C to Co Luong and Dong Dieng. Measured on OpenStreetMap that is about 185 km to Ban Don. The national tourism site and VnExpress say 160 km, and the biodiversity agency says 210 km; none of them says which route or end point it measures. The other route follows the Ho Chi Minh road past Cuc Phuong National Park and Cam Thuy. Mai Chau is only about 46 km from Ban Don, so many travellers pair the two; our Mai Chau valley guide covers that side.

From Ninh Binh

About 140 km by road, and 3 to 4 hours without going back through Hanoi. Shared limousines cost 350,000–450,000 VND one way depending on the vehicle. One operator picks up at 7:30 am at the Tam Coc boat station, Dinh Tien Hoang square in Ninh Binh and the Van Long boat station, drops off at the main resorts, and leaves Pu Luong at 1:30 pm for the return. If you are coming from Hanoi first, see how to get from Hanoi to Ninh Binh.

Getting around once you are there

The main sights are spread out: Kho Muong is about 10 km from Ban Don and Hieu waterfall 12–20 km, on narrow mountain roads, so you need wheels or a guide. Homestays and resorts rent motorbikes for about 100,000–200,000 VND a day, fuel extra, and many lend bicycles. If you have never ridden steep, broken roads, ask your homestay to arrange a driver instead of renting.

Kho Muong and the Bat Cave: getting in and the fee

Kho Muong is a Thai village of 62 households (VietNamNet, June 2025) in a secluded valley about 10 km from Ban Don. Getting in is the hard part: VnExpress describes steep, winding sections along a cliff edge. In visitors’ videos, cars stop at the village gate, where there is parking and a price board for local motorbike taxis that carry people down; others walk. Fares heard in the videos vary, so agree on one before you get on.

The cave, called Kho Muong Cave or Hang Doi (Bat Cave), is reached on foot across the rice fields. VietNamNet gives its length as about 2.5 km, with stalactites. Visitors in four separate videos from 2025–2026 paid 10,000 VND each at the path. Inside, the videos show steep steps down, wet rock, handrails you will want to hold, and the smell and noise of the bats. Wear shoes with grip, not sandals, and skip it after heavy rain.

Can you swim at Hieu waterfall?

Sometimes. The national tourism site says you can occasionally swim there, and in visitors’ videos people swim in the pools. Hieu waterfall (Thác Hiêu) is five small cascades and pools at Hieu village in Co Lung commune, 12–20 km from Ban Don depending on the road you take. In the same videos the path in is lined with eateries, and there is somewhere to leave a motorbike.

Son, Ba and Muoi villages on the road from Mai Chau

Son, Ba and Muoi (often written Son–Ba–Muoi) are three highland Thai villages in the former Lung Cao commune, now part of Co Lung, on the road between Mai Chau and Pu Luong. VnExpress describes traditional stilt houses and temperatures of around 18–22 °C. If you come in from Mai Chau by road, you pass close by, which makes it an easy first stop rather than a separate trip.

Bamboo water wheels and rafting on the Cham stream

The bamboo water wheels (cọn nước) are turned by the stream current and lift water into bamboo pipes that feed the fields above. In visitors’ videos they stand along the Cham stream near Chieng Lau village, close to where the bamboo rafts set off. VnExpress notes the wheels only turn in the rainy season, so in the dry months you may find them still.

The raft trip is gentle: a 45-minute to one-hour float on the Cham stream at Chieng Lau, according to VietNamNet. VnExpress gives 50,000 VND per person on rafts that carry 8 to 14 people.

Pho Doan market: which days?

Thursday and Sunday mornings only, from about 6 am until close to noon. VietnamPlus (October 2026), Bao Van Hoa and VnExpress all give the same two days. The market dates from the French colonial period and serves the Thai and Muong villages around it; it now has a roofed hall of about 2,000 m². Plan your stay around one of those mornings, and get there early.

Trekking in Pu Luong: routes and difficulty

Most walking here is village-to-village on field paths, and it ranges from easy to hard.

  • Easy: the terraces around Ban Don, continuing to Uoi and Lan villages. Our tours use a walk of about 5 km here, on paths and village tracks.
  • Moderate to hard: the off-road trail to Kho Muong and Bang village, about 10 km, which our trekking tour rates 4 out of 5. It crosses streams and hills.
  • Hard: Pu Luong peak, about 1,700 m. VnExpress says the climb takes about 6 hours in good weather, with steep, dangerous sections, and advises beginners to go with a guided group. Viet Nam News (December 2025) describes an 11 km route from Pu Luong village to Bang village with slopes over 35 degrees.

VnExpress’s packing list is short and sensible: long sleeves, a hat, proper trekking shoes, insect repellent, water and food. For the peak, go with a local guide, as VnExpress advises.

Is Pu Luong safe in the rainy season?

The roads are the main risk. In November 2025, after a run of storms, landslides opened at several points along the main road through Ban Don, according to Dan Tri’s English service (12 November 2025) and Lao Dong. The asphalt cracked and sank by about 50 cm in places, rice fields were buried and power poles came down. The commune fenced off the slip sites and was allocated 7 billion VND for repairs; the same report says some people kept moving the barriers to get through.

We found no provincial advisory for Pu Luong as of November 2026, and no later report on whether the 2025 repairs are finished. In practice: after heavy rain, ask your homestay which roads are open before you set off, respect any barrier, and leave the Bat Cave, the Kho Muong road and the peak for a dry day. Visitors’ videos show the cave steps wet and slippery.

Where to stay in Pu Luong, and what it costs

Two very different budgets. A bed in a village stilt house, at Kho Muong, Hieu, Kit or Ban Don, costs about 100,000–250,000 VND per person a night. The best-known eco-resorts around Ban Don, such as Pu Luong Retreat, run about 1–3.5 million VND per room a night, depending on the room and season. VnExpress lists cheaper resort rooms from around 300,000 VND too, so there is a middle range. Stilt-house homestays put you closer to the villages; the resorts have pools and valley views.

Two or three days is about right: one day for Ban Don and Kho Muong, one for Hieu, the water wheels and the raft, and a third if you want the peak or a market morning.

Pu Luong tours from Hanoi

If you would rather not book vans and guides yourself, these three cover different lengths: a day trip with Kho Muong cave and a 5 km terrace walk, a two-day trip with the water wheels and a raft, and a three-day trek with the long Kho Muong and Hieu trails. The full range is on our Pu Luong tour page.
