Hanna Tran Hanna Tran | Updated October 16, 2026

Fried cakes with spring onion (bánh hành chiên) are a snack made from a few simple ingredients you probably already have in the fridge. The author came up with them after a nap on a day of heavy rain, wanting something to eat from what was in the fridge, and served them to the whole family as a snack.

Bánh Hành Chiên Recipe: Fried Cakes with Spring Onion

Time: the dough rests for 30 minutes.

    Ingredients

    • 200 g wheat flour, plus a little for rolling
    • 50 g spring onion
    • ½ teaspoon salt
    • ½ teaspoon Maggi seasoning
    • Warm water (30 degrees)
    • 3–4 teaspoons oil, for frying
    • Soya sauce and chili, for serving

How to make bánh hành chiên

    1. Make the dough

Mix the wheat flour with ½ teaspoon salt and ½ teaspoon Maggi seasoning. Slowly pour in warm water (30 degrees), stirring the whole time you pour. Keep adding water until the mixture comes together into a dough that doesn’t stick to your hand when you test it.

Clean the spring onion and slice it small.

Mix the sliced spring onion into the dough and knead it well with your hands. Cover it carefully with cling film and wait for 30 minutes.

    3. Shape the cakes

Divide the dough into small pieces. Dust a little wheat flour on a flat plate or the table, and use a wooden pestle to roll each piece into a circle.

    4. Fry

Heat the oil (3–4 teaspoons) in a pan. Put the circles of dough into the pan one by one and fry until their surfaces turn brownish yellow. This step doesn’t take long.

Serve the cakes as a snack. The author’s choice is to eat them with soya sauce mixed with sliced chili.
