Chè thập cẩm combines four kinds of beans with a sugar syrup and coconut milk. It’s very popular in the South, and in Ho Chi Minh City you can find it almost everywhere: in supermarkets, from vendors and from hawkers. It’s easy to make at home. Plan ahead: the beans soak for 2 hours before they’re stewed. Ingredients 100 g green beans 100 g black beans 100 g white beans 100 g red beans 500 g sugar candy 500 ml coconut 30 g starch flour A little salt How to make chè thập cẩm 1. Cook the beans Put all the beans in boiling water and soak them for 2 hours. Take the beans out, put them in cold water and stew them on the stove until they’re cooked and soft. 2. Make the syrup Cook the sugar candy with ½ liter of water, skimming off the sludge. 3. Make the coconut milk Soak the coconut in warm water, then squeeze out the juice. Put the coconut milk in a pot and bring it to the boil. Pour in the flour mixed with water and stir until the mixture is moderately thick. Season with salt so it tastes slightly salty. 4. Serve Put the beans in a glass, then pour over the syrup and the coconut milk. Serve it hot or cold, as you like. Share:
