Gỏi vịt is a banana flower salad with sliced duck breast. It’s easy to eat, especially on hot days, and it brings vegetables and duck meat together under a sweet and sour sauce. You can also serve it as a dessert. There are just two steps once the sauce is made.

Gỏi Vịt Recipe: Banana Flower Salad with Sliced Duck Breast

Time: the original says about 20 minutes to make; the duck also marinates for 2 hours.

    Ingredients

    For the salad

    • 300 g duck breast
    • 100 g sliced banana flower
    • 50 g sliced carrots
    • 50 g onion
    • 1 big chilli
    • Basil, oyster sauce, fish sauce
    • Salt, soy sauce, sugar, pepper
    • Cilantro
    • Roasted peanuts

For the sweet and sour sauce

    • 100 g sugar
    • 1 tablespoon fish sauce
    • 3 teaspoons lime juice
    • 2 teaspoons minced garlic

    How to make gỏi vịt

    1. Make the sweet and sour sauce

Put the sugar and fish sauce into a pan and cook until the mixture turns viscous. Add the lime juice, then the minced garlic. This sauce is one of the important steps in the dish.

    2. Marinate and cook the duck

Marinate the duck breast with oyster sauce, soy sauce, onion, salt, sugar, sauce (the original does not say which) and pepper. Mix well and leave it for 2 hours to take in the flavours.

You can boil the duck breast, but the dish is better if you grill it, because grilling turns the duck golden and fragrant.

    3. Toss the salad

Mix the duck breast with the sliced banana flower, sliced carrots, sliced onion, chopped chilli and basil. Add the sweet and sour sauce to the mixture, and it’s ready to serve.
