Plan ahead: the beef marinates in the fridge for about 4 – 5 hours before grilling.

    Ingredients

    • 500g beef
    • 1 tablespoon minced lemongrass
    • Black sauce (the kind usually served with pho)
    • Salt, oyster sauce, honey, sugar, pepper, garlic, sesame oil, Maggi seasoning, vinegar
    • Cucumber, carrot, coriander, chili
    • Breads, chili sauce

How to make bánh mì thịt bò nướng

    1. Grind and marinate the beef

Clean the beef and grind it well. Choose beef with a little fat in it, which makes better grilled beef.

Marinate it with the minced lemongrass, salt, oyster sauce, honey, pepper, Maggi seasoning, minced garlic and vegetable oil, and mix well. Cover it carefully with cling film and keep it in the fridge (vegetable drawer) for about 4 – 5 hours before grilling.

    2. Make the black sauce

Peel the garlic and grind it well. Heat the oil, add the garlic to the pan and fry until fragrant. Add 2 tablespoons black sauce, 1 teaspoon salt and a little water, and cook until it boils. Turn off the heat and pour it into a clean bowl.

    3. Prepare the vegetables

Clean the cucumber well, remove the seeds and slice it thinly. Peel and clean the carrot and cut it into strips. Mix the carrot with sugar, vinegar and salt; it should taste a little sour. Wait about 15 minutes, then press all the water out of the carrot with your hands. Clean the coriander well and let it dry.

    4. Shape and grill the beef

Scoop 1 spoon of the beef mixture and roll it carefully around a wooden stick. Don’t take too much, or it won’t cook inside.

Arrange the sticks on a grilling tray and grill them. Now and then, brush a little sesame oil over them so they don’t dry out.

    5. Fill the bread

Cut the bread in half and use a spoon to spread a little of the black sauce from step 2 on it.
