This is mainly because of the affordable and available public transportation system running within and between the provinces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The cost for renting or hiring a car in Vietnam ranges from VND560,000\/day &#8211; VND2,600,000\/day (approximately $25-100), which depends on the type of car you opt for and its luxury. You have many cars to choose from yet the most common is 4-seat and 7-seat cars. Clients will be responsible for fuel cost, which is relatively high in comparison with Vietnamese living standard.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The payment for car rental is often made in cash to the agency. Some people say it&#8217;s like a non-stop adventure (at least for first-time visitors or the ones who are new to Vietnam).\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is a saying about driving in Vietnam: <strong><em>When in Vietnam, drive as the Vietnamese do<\/em><\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whilst you may survive outside the big cities (Hanoi or HCMC) (to a level), within the cities, you tend to be at the mercy of millions of motorbikes. For example, turning into a side street is not as simply as turning right or left. You will have to cross countless motorbikes in their designated lane and they will not give space or way when you turn, or very slowly.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There seems to be a lack of enforcement of regulations. The unexpected happens nearly every minute of every day when you are on the road. Drive defensively, even offensively.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some tips and facts of driving in Vietnam:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>People don\u2019t like to stop in Vietnam<\/li><li>People often breakdown of driving lanes<\/li><li>Many people drive on the wrong side of the road (the legal side is right)<\/li><li>You have to check blined spots and mirrors<\/li><li>You should be predictable on the streets<\/li><li>Motorbike can come from every direction without signalling<\/li><li>Be prepared for braking<\/li><li>Prepare for turning left and U-turning<\/li><li>Keep distance<\/li><li>Look over your shoulder when going to turn<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"4-what-driving-license-is-required-in-vietnam\"><\/span><strong>4. What Driving License is Required in Vietnam?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To drive a car in Vietnam, you must be 18 years of age. However, the companies or agencies may require the minimum age at least 21.<br>In theory, foreigners are now allowed to drive in Vietnam with either an International Driving Permit (IDP) or a Vietnam driver\u2019s license to drive in Vietnam legally. This must be accompanied by a local insurance for it so as to be valid. In reality, there are virtually no car-hire agencies in Vietnam that will give a car to a foreigner visitor without including a driver. Even with an international driving permit and your home driver\u2019s license, the chances of renting a car in Vietnam are small, but not impossible.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Car hire tends to be a car and driver for the obvious reasons.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Vietnam, to use IDP (issued by <a href=\"https:\/\/treaties.un.org\/pages\/ViewDetailsIII.aspx?src=TREATY&amp;mtdsg_no=XI-B-19&amp;chapter=11&amp;Temp=mtdsg3&amp;clang=_en#15\">countries that signed the Vienna 1968 Convention on Road Traffic<\/a>), you will need to bring your national driver\u2019s license issued by your home country.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Note that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Your national driver\u2019s license and IDP must not be expired<\/li><li>You could only drive the class which your current national driver\u2019s license permits to drive.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"5-vietnam-drivers-license\"><\/span><strong>5. Vietnam Driver\u2019s License<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To convert your home country license to Vietnam\u2019s you need:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>A valid passport containing 3-month visa<\/li><li>A form for requesting an issuance of a driver\u2019s license (in HCMC, the form could be gotten at the Driver\u2019s License Registration Office or HCMC Department of Transportation)<\/li><li>A Vietnamese translated version of your national driver\u2019s license issued by an Authorized Organization.<\/li><li>A certified copy of your national driver\u2019s license<\/li><li>\u00a0A certified copy of your passport (visa page and photo page)<\/li><li>Three 3x4cm ID size photos (taken at the submitted place)<\/li><li>A fee of VND135,000 \/ license<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These documents will be submitted to the authorities for the driver\u2019s license registration at the Driver\u2019s License Registration Office or Ho Chi Minh City Department of&nbsp; Transportation. Passport and driver\u2019s license must be presented when you submit the documents.
