Bac Ha Market is located in Bac Ha District, Lao Cai province, about 80km from Sapa town center. Bac Ha has become a popular tourist attraction for those who would like to experience the atmosphere of the colorful local hill tribes. Tourists visiting Sapa have many options to select. Some of them may choose a short trekking trip to the local villages while others may choose to pay a visit to the local markets, of which, Bac Ha is a must-see one. Every Sunday, Bac Ha host the biggest fair near the mountainous highlands and Chinese border. It is a trading centre and meeting place for couples, friends, and relatives, and it is a typical weekly activity for the H’Mong and other minority groups living in the locality. Local products for sale or barter are carried on horseback. At the fair, adventurous gastronomes can try thang co blood porridge, a popular dish of the H’Mong and other local people. On the way to Bac Ha, tourists will pass through the high mountains and deep valleys with fantastic rice paddies along the way. Sometimes you have to stop to grasp the wonderful moments by taking some photos. You may see local people carrying goods and local products on horse’s back heading toward the market. They have to get up so early to reach the market in time. Previously, Bac Ha market often took place on a sliding hill. Recently, the market has been reconstruct and divided into specific areas, so its original beauty has not been the same as that in the past. At Bac Ha market, local people sell their local products like fruits, vegetables, etc. as well as the necessary equipments for their daily work. Another special product type sold there includes the brocatelle items such as clothes, hand bags, etc. Many foreign tourists are impressed by the beauty of the pictures made by local people with vivid patterns plus the beautiful and harmonious combination of colors. For local men, Bac Ha market is also a place where they gather to drink together. Wine can be considered as a specialty of the H’Mong people. In the market session, you may hear the sounds of traditional songs and musical instruments of the local boys and girls. Foreign tourists are especially excited with the daily lives and the custom of hill tribe people. In the commercial age when most highland markets are influenced by modern style, Bac Ha is still a traditional market which reserves its unique features. This is a great place for those who love nature and love to explore the local traditional characteristics of the friendly hill tribes.
