Situated in the mountainous midland region, Phu Tho province is 80km to the northwest of Hanoi, 60km from Noi Bai International Airport, 200km from Lao Cai border gate. The province shares its border with Vinh Phuc province and Hanoi on the east, Son La province on the west, Hoa Binh on the south, and Yen Bai, Tuyen Quang provinces on the north.

Phu Tho has favorable location with regards to transportation with three big rivers (Red River, Lo River, Da River), the railway transport system (Hanoi – Lao Cai – Con Minh), the national highway No.2, the trans-Asia Highway (the important connection in economic exchange among Vietnam and other ASEAN countries).

The province also lies at the transportation center including road, railway, and waterway routes. Phu Tho links Red River Delta region with Northwestern mountainous provinces.

From Hanoi, tourists can transport to Phu Tho by coach or taxi. It is not too far from Hanoi, so traveling by motorbike is a popular option, especially for back-packing travelers.
