One of the many attractions in Phu Quoc Island is Dinh Cau Rock (Cau Temple), which is located at the mouth of the Dong Duong River. It is considered the symbol of Phu Quoc where sand, sea, sun, and stone blend in perfect harmony. Dinh Cau Rock is not only an odd-shaped scenic beauty but also a quaint sacred holy place. It is a combination of Buddhist temple and lighthouse that was built in 1937 as a dedication to Thien Hau (the Goddess of the sea) who provides protection for the fisherman and vessels that head out to the open waters. The romantic steps take you to the top, where you can feel the gentle sea breeze, watch sunset over the eroded rock formation and enjoy a peaceful view of the Duong Dong River
The temple’s main wooden door is carved 3 letters of Thach Son Dien and construction and restoring dates of July 14 1937 and July 14 1997. It has so far preserved many ancient architectures and precious artifacts that they indicate a closely attachment of traditional history of the islanders.
The islanders and seafarers annually visit to the temple on the big and Lunar New Year holidays. Especially, the local festival days are based on the lunar calendar and fall on Oct. 15 and 16. Therefore, the temple becomes a great attraction for tourists in their trip to Phu Quoc Island.
